Today marks World Blood Donor Day, celebrating the essential role of blood donors in our community and across Canada. Every week at the Comox Valley Hospital Wellness Center, approximately 10 people receive Red Blood Cell transfusions containing up to 3 units of blood per transfusion. One blood donation equals one unit, meaning that up to 30 donations are used per week. The Wellness Centre also provides IV Immunoglobulin treatment, which is collected through the blood donation process, for up to 20 patients per week.
These are life-saving treatments, and thanks to blood donors, they are provided right here, close to home, in our community.
Thank you to all who are able to, and choose to donate blood. Today, we celebrate you!
