Strengthening community through music

Grant from Music Heals Supports Music Therapy at Cumberland Lodge

The transformative power of music continues to bring joy and healing to residents at Cumberland Lodge, thanks to a generous $5,000 grant from the Music Heals Charitable Foundation in support of their music therapy program. This latest contribution is part of Music Heals ongoing commitment having donated over $53,000 in the past five years to support music therapy at long-term care sites in the Comox Valley.

Music therapy at Cumberland Lodge has become a cherished experience for residents, fostering connection, reminiscence, and emotional well-being. Bethany, a dedicated music therapist, leads engaging sessions that reach residents on a deep and meaningful level.

Staff at Cumberland lodge talk about the wide-reaching benefits of the program:

“Music hits all five areas we try to target—cognitive, social, emotional, spiritual, and physical. Music triggers memories, which lead to meaningful discussions.”

The program has also proven invaluable in connecting with quieter residents and those receiving palliative care who are unable to leave their rooms.

“If someone can’t come out of their room, Bethany brings the music to them.”

The therapeutic effects of music extend to residents facing significant challenges, including grief and dementia. Another staff member recounted how a resident who recently lost her husband finds comfort through individual music sessions.

Watching Bethany interact with residents at a recent St. Patrick’s Day celebration demonstrated the atmosphere of warmth, resilience, and healing she creates through music, bringing genuine joy to those around her.

The Comox Valley Healthcare Foundation and Cumberland Lodge are deeply grateful for the Music Heals Charitable Foundation and its unwavering support. This funding ensures that music therapy remains an integral part of residents’ lives, offering them comfort, connection, and happiness.
